A Scrotal Ultrasound is a real-time imaging scan of the scrotum, testes, and epididymis using high-frequency sound waves. It is the first-line imaging investigation for testicular pain, scrotal swelling, testicular lumps, and male infertility evaluation. It includes Colour Doppler assessment of blood flow — making it capable of detecting testicular torsion (a surgical emergency requiring immediate action) and varicocele. Unlike other imaging investigations, a Scrotal Ultrasound is painless, requires no preparation, and delivers results in 4 hours. No radiation. No injections. When to book immediately: Sudden severe testicular pain is a medical emergency — it may indicate testicular torsion, where the blood supply to the testis is cut off. If not treated within 4–6 hours, the testis may be lost permanently. If you have sudden severe testicular pain, proceed directly to a hospital emergency department. Do not wait for an ultrasound appointment.
Key benefits of this package include:
Testicular torsion — absent or markedly reduced blood flow (surgical emergency)
Testicular tumour — solid hypoechoic testicular mass (urgent referral required)
Orchitis — testicular inflammation, increased blood flow on Doppler
Testicular microlithiasis — small calcifications within the testis (requires monitoring)
Testicular atrophy — reduced size and vascularity
Testicular trauma — haematoma, rupture, or fracture post-injury
Undescended testis (cryptorchidism) — locating an undescended testis in the inguinal canal
Epididymitis — inflamed epididymis, typically from infection; increased Doppler flow
Epididymal cysts — smooth, well-defined, fluid-filled (very common and usually benign)
Epididymo-orchitis — combined infection of epididymis and testis
Hydrocele — fluid surrounding the testis (common)
Haematocele — blood collection following trauma
Pyocele — infected fluid collection
Varicocele — dilated pampiniform venous plexus (>3 mm); a significant cause of male infertility
Absent or reversed Doppler flow — torsion indicator
