The Thyroid Profile test measures three key hormones of the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis: T3 (Triiodothyronine), T4 (Thyroxine), and TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone). Together, these three values provide a complete picture of thyroid gland function — detecting hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), and subclinical thyroid disease that may not yet cause obvious symptoms. Thyroid disorders are among the most common endocrine conditions in India, particularly in women, making this one of the most important routine screening tests. No fasting required.
Key benefits of this package include:
What Does the Thyroid Profile Test Measure?
| Level / Result | Possible Interpretation |
|---|---|
| TSH normal + T3/T4 normal | Normal thyroid function — euthyroid state |
| TSH elevated + T3/T4 normal (Subclinical hypothyroidism) | Early/mild thyroid underactivity — TSH rises before T4 falls; monitor or treat depending on symptoms and TSH level |
| TSH elevated + T4 low (Overt hypothyroidism) | Underactive thyroid — requires levothyroxine replacement therapy |
| TSH low + T3/T4 normal (Subclinical hyperthyroidism) | Early thyroid overactivity — TSH suppressed before T3/T4 rise; monitor for progression and cardiac risk |
| TSH low + T3/T4 elevated (Overt hyperthyroidism) | Overactive thyroid — Graves' disease, toxic nodule, or thyroiditis; requires antithyroid treatment |
| TSH low + T4 elevated + T3 normal (T4 toxicosis) | Rare — excess T4 conversion; exogenous T4 intake; specialist evaluation required |
| TSH normal or low + T3 elevated alone (T3 toxicosis) | Early Graves' or toxic nodule — T3-predominant hyperthyroidism; Free T3 most useful here |
Important Note: TSH is the most sensitive single thyroid function marker — it should be the first test ordered for thyroid screening. Isolated TSH abnormality with normal T3/T4 represents subclinical thyroid disease. All thyroid results must be interpreted in clinical context, alongside thyroid antibodies (anti-TPO, anti-thyroglobulin), thyroid ultrasound, and symptoms. All results must be reviewed by a physician.
Hypothyroidism — India's Most Underdiagnosed Condition: Studies suggest that 1 in 10 Indians — and up to 1 in 5 Indian women — has subclinical or overt hypothyroidism. The condition is particularly common in women over 30, postpartum women, and those with autoimmune disease. Classic symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, dry skin, hair loss, constipation, heavy periods, and depression — all non-specific symptoms that are frequently attributed to other causes, delaying diagnosis by years. A simple TSH test is all that is needed to screen for it. Medall's affordable Thyroid Profile makes annual thyroid screening accessible to all.
