The Renal Function Test (RFT) — also widely known as the Kidney Function Test (KFT) — is a comprehensive panel of blood and urine tests that together provide a complete assessment of how well your kidneys are filtering waste, maintaining fluid balance, and regulating electrolytes. It is one of the most important panels in preventive health and chronic disease monitoring, and is included in most full body checkup packages at Medall.
Key benefits of this package include:
What Does the Renal Function Test (RFT) Measure?
| Level / Result | Possible Interpretation |
|---|---|
| All parameters normal | Healthy kidney function — no evidence of renal disease |
| Elevated Creatinine + low eGFR | Impaired glomerular filtration — CKD, AKI, or dehydration; further evaluation needed |
| High BUN + Elevated Creatinine | Nitrogen waste accumulation — kidney failure, dehydration, high-protein diet, GI bleed |
| High Uric Acid | Hyperuricaemia — gout risk, kidney stone risk, early kidney dysfunction |
| Abnormal Urine Analysis (protein, blood, casts) | Kidney or urinary tract pathology — infection, glomerulonephritis, nephrotic syndrome |
| Elevated BUN with normal Creatinine (high BUN:Cr ratio) | Pre-renal cause — dehydration, GI bleeding, or high-protein diet rather than intrinsic kidney disease |
Important Note: RFT parameters must be interpreted together as a panel. Individual values can be misleading — for example, creatinine can remain normal until 50% of kidney function is lost. eGFR calculated from creatinine provides a more sensitive measure of kidney function. All results should be reviewed by a physician in clinical context.
The eGFR — Why It Matters More Than Creatinine Alone: The estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR) is calculated from serum creatinine, age, sex, and ethnicity. It represents the volume of blood the kidneys filter per minute and is the most sensitive measure of kidney function available from a simple blood test. CKD is classified into stages G1–G5 based on eGFR: G1 (≥90 ml/min — normal), G2 (60–89), G3a (45–59), G3b (30–44), G4 (15–29), G5 (<15 — kidney failure). Medall's reports include eGFR calculation where creatinine is measured.
