A Doppler Ultrasound is a specialised ultrasound technique that measures and visualises blood flow through arteries and veins in real time. Using the Doppler effect — the change in sound wave frequency as blood moves toward or away from the probe — it creates colour-coded maps of blood flow direction, speed, and resistance. Unlike standard ultrasound (which shows structure), Doppler uniquely shows how blood is moving — making it essential for detecting blood clots (DVT), arterial blockages, carotid disease, kidney blood flow, and blood flow abnormalities during pregnancy. No radiation. No injections for most scans. Completely safe. Types of Doppler at Medall: * Peripheral Venous Doppler — deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in legs * Peripheral Arterial Doppler — arterial disease in legs (PAD) * Carotid Doppler — carotid artery stenosis (stroke risk) * Renal Doppler — kidney blood flow (renovascular hypertension) * Obstetric Doppler — foetal blood flow in pregnancy
Key benefits of this package include:
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) — blood clots in deep leg veins, a cause of pulmonary embolism
Superficial thrombophlebitis — clots in surface veins
Chronic venous insufficiency — incompetent valves causing varicose veins and leg oedema
Venous reflux — backward blood flow from valve failure
Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) — narrowing of leg arteries causing claudication
Carotid artery stenosis — plaque narrowing carotid arteries, a major stroke risk factor
Aneurysm — abnormal dilatation of an artery wall
Arterial occlusion — complete blockage of an artery
Renal artery stenosis — narrowing causing renovascular hypertension
Hepatic and portal vein blood flow — in liver disease and portal hypertension
Aortic assessment — abdominal aortic aneurysm screening
Umbilical artery Doppler — foetal wellbeing assessment in high-risk pregnancies
Middle cerebral artery (MCA) Doppler — foetal anaemia screening
Uterine artery Doppler — pre-eclampsia risk assessment
