Doppler Ultrasound — About the Test

A Doppler Ultrasound is a specialised ultrasound technique that measures and visualises blood flow through arteries and veins in real time. Using the Doppler effect — the change in sound wave frequency as blood moves toward or away from the probe — it creates colour-coded maps of blood flow direction, speed, and resistance. Unlike standard ultrasound (which shows structure), Doppler uniquely shows how blood is moving — making it essential for detecting blood clots (DVT), arterial blockages, carotid disease, kidney blood flow, and blood flow abnormalities during pregnancy. No radiation. No injections for most scans. Completely safe. What Happens During a Doppler Ultrasound? (20–30 Minutes)

Step 1 — Preparation: Preparation varies by scan type. For abdominal Doppler (renal, hepatic), 4–6 hours fasting improves image quality. For peripheral limb Doppler, no preparation is required. Your booking team will advise.
Step 2 — Positioning: You will lie on the scanning table. The sonographer will ask you to expose the area being scanned — leg veins, neck, or abdomen — and apply gel to the skin.
Step 3 — The scan: The sonographer moves the Doppler probe along the vessel being assessed. The screen displays real-time colour-coded blood flow — red for flow toward the probe, blue for flow away. The sonographer takes measurements of flow velocity, vessel diameter, and resistance at multiple points.
Step 4 — Compression test (for DVT): For venous leg Doppler, the sonographer will periodically press the probe firmly into the skin to compress the vein — a normal vein compresses completely; a vein with a clot does not.
Step 5 — Done: 20–30 minutes depending on the area scanned. Report ready within 4 hours.
