The Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) test measures the amount of nitrogen in the blood that comes from the waste product urea — generated when the liver breaks down proteins and excreted by the kidneys. BUN is a key marker of kidney function: when the kidneys are not filtering efficiently, urea (and its nitrogen component) accumulates in the blood. It is a standard component of the Renal Function Test (RFT/KFT) panel and one of the most widely used indicators of kidney health. No fasting required.

Important Note: BUN must always be interpreted alongside serum creatinine and the BUN:Creatinine ratio, as BUN alone can be elevated for non-kidney reasons (high protein diet, GI bleeding, dehydration). The ratio distinguishes pre-renal from renal causes of azotaemia. All results should be reviewed by a physician in clinical context.
BUN vs. Serum Urea — Understanding the Difference: BUN (Blood Urea Nitrogen) and Serum Urea measure the same metabolic waste — they differ only in what is being measured and the unit used. BUN measures only the nitrogen fraction of urea (28 out of urea's molecular weight of 60), while Serum Urea measures the entire urea molecule. Serum Urea (mg/dL) = BUN (mg/dL) × 2.14. Both are clinically equivalent — Medall reports Serum Urea in the RFT panel, but BUN can be calculated directly from it. The BUN test is also listed separately for laboratories and ordering physicians who prefer the BUN reporting convention.
