The AST (Aspartate Aminotransferase) test — also known as the SGOT test — measures the level of the AST enzyme in your blood. Unlike ALT which is liver-specific, AST is found in the liver, heart muscle, skeletal muscle, kidneys, and red blood cells. Elevated AST is an important indicator of liver damage, heart muscle injury (including heart attack), and muscle disorders. It is routinely ordered as part of the Liver Function Test (LFT) and is most informative when interpreted alongside ALT. No fasting required.
