A Breast Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create detailed images of the breast tissue — with no radiation, no compression, and no discomfort. It is the most important complementary breast imaging tool alongside mammography. Breast Ultrasound is particularly valuable for: * Evaluating breast lumps — distinguishing fluid-filled cysts (benign) from solid masses (requiring further evaluation) * Investigating mammogram findings — characterising abnormalities detected on mammography * Young women and dense breasts — mammography is less effective in dense breast tissue; ultrasound sees through it * Guiding procedures — biopsy needle guidance for precise sampling No radiation. What Happens During a Breast Ultrasound? (15–20 Minutes)

Step 1 — Before the scan: No preparation needed. You will be asked to undress from the waist up and lie on the scanning table on your back, with your arm raised above your head on the side being scanned.
Step 2 — The scan: The sonographer applies warm gel to the breast and moves the probe across the entire breast surface in a systematic, overlapping pattern — ensuring complete coverage of all breast tissue including the axillary tail (extending toward the armpit). Both breasts are typically scanned even if symptoms are on one side only.
Step 3 — Targeted assessment: If a specific lump or area of concern has been identified (clinically or on mammogram), the sonographer will focus additional detailed imaging on that area — measuring size, shape, margins, and internal characteristics.
Step 4 — Done: 15–20 minutes. The gel wipes off easily. Your report is reviewed by a specialist radiologist and ready within 4 hours.

What a Breast Ultrasound Can Detect

Breast Lumps and Masses — Characterisation

Simple cysts — thin-walled, fluid-filled, anechoic — almost always benign; no treatment needed

Complex or complicated cysts — fluid with internal debris or septations — require monitoring or aspiration

Fibroadenomas — smooth, well-defined, solid, mobile — most common solid benign breast tumour in young women

Breast cancer — irregular margins, posterior acoustic shadowing, hard consistency — triggers biopsy

Phyllodes tumour — large, rapidly growing solid mass

Lymph nodes — normal intramammary and axillary nodes vs. abnormal enlarged nodes

Inflammatory Conditions

Breast abscess — fluid collection with surrounding inflammatory changes

Mastitis — diffuse breast tissue inflammation, particularly in breastfeeding women

Fat necrosis — post-traumatic or post-surgical area of calcified fat

Structural Assessment

Breast implant integrity — detecting implant rupture or peri-implant fluid

Duct ectasia — dilated breast ducts

Galactocele — milk-filled cyst in breastfeeding women

Axilla (Armpit)

Axillary lymph node assessment — size, shape, and cortical thickness of nodes

Enlarged or abnormal lymph nodes — may indicate local infection or spread from breast cancer
