A KUB Ultrasound (Kidney, Ureter, Bladder Ultrasound) is a real-time imaging scan of the urinary tract — using high-frequency sound waves to create detailed images of the kidneys, ureters, and bladder without any radiation. It is the first-line investigation for kidney stones, flank pain, blood in urine (haematuria), urinary tract infections, and kidney swelling. In a single scan of 15–20 minutes, it can assess the size, shape, and structure of both kidneys, detect stones anywhere in the urinary tract, and evaluate the bladder for abnormalities. No radiation. No injections. Completely safe. Important preparation: A full bladder is required for the bladder portion of the scan. Drink 4–6 glasses of water 1 hour before your appointment and do not urinate until after the scan.
Key benefits of this package include:
Kidney stones (renal calculi) — echogenic foci with posterior acoustic shadowing
Hydronephrosis — swelling of the kidney from urinary outflow obstruction
Renal cysts — simple or complex fluid-filled structures within the kidney
Renal tumours — solid masses requiring further evaluation with CT or MRI
Kidney size and cortical thickness — indicators of chronic kidney disease (CKD)
Renal vascular abnormalities — when combined with Doppler imaging
Pyelonephritis — increased echogenicity and kidney swelling from infection
Polycystic kidney disease — multiple cysts throughout both kidneys
Ureteric stones — most visible at ureterovesical junction (where ureter meets bladder)
Ureteric dilatation — widening of the ureter indicating downstream obstruction
Hydro-ureter — ureter distension from obstruction
Bladder stones — echogenic foci that shift with position change
Bladder wall thickening — from chronic infection, outflow obstruction, or tumour
Bladder tumours — intraluminal masses
Bladder diverticula — outpouching of the bladder wall
Post-void residual volume — measures how completely the bladder empties
Enlarged prostate impression — in men, indentation of bladder base from BPH
