Rh-Negative Pregnancy — Why It Matters: When an Rh-negative mother carries an Rh-positive baby, fetal red blood cells can enter the mother's circulation during delivery, miscarriage, or invasive procedures — triggering the mother to produce anti-D antibodies. In a subsequent Rh-positive pregnancy, these antibodies cross the placenta and attack the baby's red blood cells, causing Haemolytic Disease of the Newborn (HDN) — ranging from mild jaundice to severe anaemia, hydrops fetalis, and death. Anti-D immunoglobulin (Rho-GAM) given at 28 weeks and after delivery to Rh-negative mothers prevents this sensitisation entirely. Early blood typing in pregnancy is therefore a critical preventive measure.
